This project combines branded product design with NFC smart tag integration — a corporate keychain with a company logo printed in a contrasting color, and an NFC tag embedded inside the body using a mid-print pause technique. Client Brief

The client was producing a corporate gifting run of 200 units — branded keychains for a product launch event, each carrying an NFC tag pre-programmed to open the company’s product landing page when tapped by a smartphone. The keychain body had to accommodate the NFC tag dimensions (25mm × 25mm, 0.8mm thickness) at a specific internal cavity, print in two colors using a Bambu Labs AMS system, and include a reinforced keyring attachment point. Our custom 3d printing design team handled the full design from the client’s SVG logo file to print-ready 3MF.

SolidWorks Modeling

The keychain body was modeled in two SolidWorks configurations — a base body in the primary brand color and a logo layer body in a contrasting accent color, both referencing the same sketch geometry so the layer interface between the two colors was geometrically exact. The NFC tag cavity was modeled at 25.4mm × 25.4mm × 0.9mm — 0.4mm clearance in each plane for reliable tag insertion. The cavity was positioned at a layer height corresponding to a clean 0.2mm layer boundary, enabling a pause-and-insert workflow with no slicer bridging required. Multi-Color Print Planning

The 3MF file was configured for Bambu Labs AMS with explicit filament assignments per body — primary color assigned to the base body, accent color assigned to the logo layer. Color transition height was defined at the exact layer where the logo profile begins, ensuring a clean edge with no bleed. Our stl file design service export process verified the 3MF configuration in Bambu Studio before delivery, confirming color assignments and pause position were correctly embedded in the file metadata.

Keyring Attachment Engineering

The attachment loop was designed as a 2.5mm wall thickness circular boss with a 6mm internal diameter — sufficient for a standard keyring wire without stress concentration at the loop base. A fillet radius of 1.5mm was applied at the loop-to-body junction to distribute load. Wall thickness at the attachment point was validated against our 3d model for printing minimum strength guidelines for a 100g hanging load in PLA.

Scaling to a 200-Unit Production Run

Designing for a single prototype and designing for a 200-unit production run are different engineering problems. For this keychain project, we considered print consistency across a full AMS spool change cycle — the primary color body consumed approximately 6 grams per unit, and the accent color logo layer consumed approximately 1.2 grams. Across 200 units, the AMS filament change position needed to be consistent to ±0.1 layer height to prevent color bleed at the transition. We achieved this by fixing the color change at a layer boundary rather than a Z-height, making it slicer-agnostic. The NFC tag cavity dimensions were also reviewed for consistency across FDM dimensional variance — the 0.4mm clearance per side was chosen after a 10-unit test run confirmed reliable tag insertion without adhesive across the full tolerance range of a 0.4mm nozzle at 0.2mm layer height.
