Reverse Engineering & CAD Replication

You have a physical part. We build the exact digital model.

You have a physical part. We build the exact digital model.

When you outsource cad design for reverse engineering, the quality of the result depends on the engineer’s ability to extract functional geometry — not just surface shape — from a physical part. At MiniCAD, we take your caliper measurements and photographs, or your 3D scan data, and rebuild a fully parametric SolidWorks model with a clean feature tree, correct mate references, and editable dimensions. The result is a model you can modify and version — not a scanned mesh you can only view.

What You Send Us

We work from three input types. Most clients send caliper measurements and photographs from multiple angles — this covers the majority of prismatic parts accurately to ±0.1mm on critical dimensions. Clients with 3D scanner access can send OBJ, STL, or PLY scan files, allowing ±0.05mm accuracy on curved surfaces. For highly organic or intricate geometry, clients ship the physical part to our Alexandria studio and we handle measurement in-house. Our solidworks design services team accommodates all three methods within our standard 24-hour delivery window.

Deliverable Files

Every order delivers: native SLDPRT or SLDASM file with full parametric feature tree, STEP AP214 for CNC and injection molding quotes, binary STL for cad design for 3d printing validation, and an optional 2D drawing with GD&T tolerances. All geometry is parametric — dimensions can be modified directly in SolidWorks after delivery without rebuilding the model. See our caliper-measured brackets and mounts portfolio item where physical hardware was reverse-engineered and delivered as STL, 3MF, and STEP from a single order. The GrabCAD Community Library engineering reference is a useful resource for locating existing native CAD files for common components before commissioning a full reverse engineering project.

Dimensional Accuracy by Input Type

Caliper-based reverse engineering achieves ±0.1mm on critical dimensions for prismatic and near-prismatic parts. For parts with significant curvature, 3D scan input is required to capture surface deviation below 0.1mm. For injection molding or close-tolerance machining applications, we document which dimensions are measurement-derived versus design-intent, and flag areas where the physical part shows wear or manufacturing variation from its original spec. Our mechanical design services team has replicated hardware ranging from consumer product enclosures to custom automotive brackets across 40+ countries.

Who Uses Reverse Engineering

Manufacturers sourcing replacement parts for discontinued components where no original CAD exists. Product designers modifying an existing physical product for a new application or market. Engineers validating a supplier’s physical output against a dimensional standard. Inventors benchmarking a competitor product to understand design decisions and differentiate their own. All of these are standard use cases for our hire solidworks designer service, handled with the same 24-hour delivery standard applied across all MiniCAD projects in 9+ years of operation.

Common Mistakes When You Outsource CAD Design

The most frequent problem clients encounter when they first outsource cad design work is receiving a file that looks correct in a viewer but lacks the underlying structure needed for downstream use. Mesh-based deliverables exported as STEP, models without logical feature trees, assemblies with floating components instead of proper mates — these are common shortcuts that cost more to fix than the original modeling. At MiniCAD, every reverse engineering deliverable is a fully parametric SolidWorks model with named features, correct mate references, and a logical rebuild order. When you need to modify a dimension, add a feature, or hand the file to another engineer, the model behaves like one that was designed from scratch with intent — because it was rebuilt that way, not just imported and re-exported. This is the standard our mechanical design services team holds on every project regardless of order size.
