3D Printed NFC Coin — Multi-Color SolidWorks Design with Embedded Smart Tag

Multi-color 3D printed coin with an NFC smart tag embedded inside the body. The tag is inserted by pausing the print at a precise layer height, then resuming — no post-processing required. Fully compatible with Bambu Labs AMS for multi-color printing. Delivered in .3MF and .STEP formats.

This multi-color NFC coin project demonstrates our stl file design service workflow applied to a precision consumer product — a flat, circular coin body printed in two contrasting colors using a Bambu Labs AMS system, with an NFC smart tag embedded inside the body at a defined mid-print layer, and no assembly or post-processing required after the print completes.

Project Overview

The client needed a short-run promotional product — 50 NFC coins for a trade show, each pre-programmed with a URL and designed to be handed to visitors as a business card alternative. The coin needed to be compact (40mm diameter, 4mm thickness), carry the company icon on the top face in a contrasting color, and function with any NFC-enabled smartphone. Our cad design for 3d printing team designed the coin from scratch in SolidWorks, planned the multi-color print configuration, and validated the NFC cavity placement before delivering the 3MF file.

Coin Geometry in SolidWorks

The coin body was modeled as a two-layer assembly in SolidWorks — a base disc 40mm × 2.5mm in the primary color, and a face disc 40mm × 1.5mm in the accent color, joined at a Z-height corresponding to the NFC tag insertion point. The NFC tag cavity was cut into the top face of the base disc at 28mm × 28mm × 0.85mm — tight enough to retain the tag by friction without adhesive, allowing repositioning if needed. A chamfered edge at 0.5mm × 45 degrees was applied around the top face perimeter for clean aesthetics and safe handling. This is solidworks modeling service precision applied to a sub-5mm stack height product.

NFC Tag Integration Technique

The NFC tag was designed to be inserted at a layer pause triggered at 2.5mm print height — the exact top face of the base disc layer. The slicer pause command was embedded in the 3MF file at the correct layer, so the print pauses automatically, the tag is placed in the cavity, and printing resumes without any manual G-code editing. The face disc layer then covers and locks the tag in place with no glue, no hardware, and no visible joint line. Every 3d printing design service order involving embedded components uses this same layer-pause methodology — geometry-driven, not process-dependent.

3MF File Configuration

The delivered 3MF file was configured for Bambu Labs AMS with explicit filament assignments, a layer pause command at 2.5mm, and print settings embedded in the file metadata — layer height 0.15mm, three perimeter walls, 15% grid infill, no support. The 3 print file was verified in Bambu Studio before delivery confirming color assignments, pause layer, and dimensional output. A STEP AP214 file was also delivered for any future design modification or manufacturing alternative.

Short-Run Production Repeatability

Producing 50 identical NFC coins with consistent color transitions requires a validated print process, not just a correct STL. We ran a five-unit validation print before the full run — checking tag cavity dimensions, color transition sharpness, and NFC read range through the 1.5mm face disc. Every unit read correctly at 10mm with any NFC-enabled smartphone. The stl file design service delivery included a print protocol document specifying slicer settings, pause layer, and tag insertion procedure so the client’s print bureau could reproduce the result without experimentation. This is the difference between a file delivery and a complete cad design for 3d printing solution: the file is verified to produce the intended physical outcome.
